Microsoft received 3,094 U.S. patents last year, continuing the steady acceleration displayed by the company in recent years, according to data released today by the IFI Claims Patent Claims Service. That kept the Redmond company at No. 3 overall for the second year in a row.
IFI said the U.S. Patent and Trademark issued a record number of patents for the year, up 31 percent. Leading the pack, by a significant margin, was IBM -- which set a new record with 5,896 patents received for the year, according to the firm's research. Samsung Electronics was No. 2 for the year, with 4,551 patents.
Standouts among other tech companies included Apple, which saw a 94 percent increase in patents, bringing it to 563 patents for the year, and making it No. 46 on the list.
Also of interest in the Seattle region, Boeing received 662 patents during the past year, up from 534 the year before.
Bloomberg News has more on the underlying trends, attributing the increase in patent awards to improved turnaround times at the USPTO, as well as the improving U.S. economy.
