Have you ever read a blog post and thought, "If only I could comment now, in exactly this spot?" Or maybe you wanted to quickly tweet a pithy quote or piece or news. If so, Seattle startup Highlighter, which just landed $300,000 in a second round of funding, has the tool for you.
As its name implies, Highlighter allows users to select text. However, Highlighter is so much more than those flourescent pens of yore: users simply select a word, phrase or paragraph, which initiates a prompt to either save, comment or share (via Facebook or Twitter) the selected text.
This is all in the name of changing the game for publishers and readers, by allowing them to engage with and share content in a more immediate and contextually-relevant way across all content, platforms and devices.
Led by Josh Mullineaux, Nate Whitehill and Matt Blancarte, the company started with a WordPress plug-in it developed as part of TechStars, a three-month incubator program. When the trio "graduated" from TechStars in November 2010, they raised $200,000 in angel financing and got to work.
To date, Highlighter has driven over 7,000 downloads and is pushing to expand its vision. GeekWire writes that co-founder Josh Mullineaux said the company has been heads-down working on a “new-and-improved” service, a Java script version that could work on any Web site - a service set to be unveiled later this month.
GeekWire also reports that electronic books are part of this vision. Highlighter is developing technology that will allow people to take notes and archive information on eReaders, and expects to roll out an app for for Android and iOS devices in the next six months.
"People love to interact with content, and they want to read it on any device that they want," said Mullineaux in his November TechStars pitch. "And they also want to share it, and that's really where we come in."
Want to try it out? CrashDev, one of Highlighter's angel investors, has the plug-in installed on its blog for readers to test.
