Mich Mathews, Microsoft’s top marketing executive, is leaving the company after working there more than 20 years.
Ad Age Digital reports that Mathews told her bosses Tuesday night she was leaving this summer. She will help COO Kevin Turner and Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer hire her replacement.
As senior vice president for Microsoft’s Central Marketing Group, Mathews is in charge of more than a $1 billion in annual marketing spending, according to Ad Age. That includes the marketing of Windows, Xbox and Bing.
Mathews told Ad Age she felt it was time to take a break and do something new. “Microsoft was chapter one and it’s time for a chapter two,” she told Ad Age.
Mathews joins Bob Muglia, the president of Microsoft’s stalwart Server & Tools Division; Robbie Bach, former president of the Entertainment & Devices Division; Stephen Elop, former president of the Microsoft Business Division; and Ray Ozzie, chief software architect, in leaving the company.
Mathews started at Microsoft in 1989 as a consultant in the U.K. She later joined Microsoft in 1993 as head of corporate public relations. She has held a succession of marketing positions in Microsoft including vice president of corporate communications.
Before working with Microsoft, Mathews spent three years at General Motors.
