RealNetworks has seen a lot of upheaval as of late. The Seattle internet veteran has shed unprofitable product lines, spun off its music subscription business and slashed jobs.
Just last week Robert Kimball resigned as CEO after leading the company through a restructuring over the last 15 months.
The digital pioneer has focused on mobile phones and cloud computing efforts. And now RealNetworks is making a major push with Helix, including a marketing campaign aimed at changing opinions about the product, and the company.
RealNetworks is working on what it says are “outdated views and misconceptions” about its Helix Media Delivery Platform, which the company says features new and improved server capability and beefed-up customer support.
RealNetworks even has a video aimed at changing attitudes that the platform is outdated and irrelevant.
RealNetworks hopes to create buzz for its new Helix Universal Media Server, the latest version of its streaming media server for mobile carriers, schools and governments.
Here is a recent email sent to RealNetworks employees from Martin Schwarz, VP for Mobile/Consumer Devices and Helix Products:
Hello –
As you know, Real’s strategy for 2011 is to grow – and that means growing revenues in the products we already have in addition to ones getting ready to launch. With this in mind, the Helix team has undertaken a major effort to reposition the Helix brand, revitalize our products and step up marketing like never before. We’re excited about the plans we have and think you will be, too.
As promised, here’s the video we played at the employee launch party.
We’re releasing it this week in hope of clearing up some misconceptions about Helix – and at the same time give Helix some personality. We hope you enjoy it.
The video is the first in a series of a number of marketing efforts we’re undertaking. Look for the relaunch of the new Helix Universal Media Server next week, followed by a new Helix Producer update about a month later. And stay tuned for more.
What would a launch be without a commemorative T-shirt! If you didn’t pick yours up at the Employee Event we’re handing them out later this week. Watch RNN for the date and time. The rest of you will be getting yours soon. Wear yours with Helix pride!
Thx,
Martin
