San Francisco is moving its government email system over to Microsoft’s cloud storage, giving Microsoft a major client as it seeks to expand its cloud-based services in the public sector.
Microsoft won out over Google in Google’s backyard for a major government client for the Microsoft Exchange Online service.
In a phone conference with reporters, City and County of San Francisco Chief Information Officer Jon Walton said the deal with Microsoft will allow the city and county to move over 23,000 email accounts to the Microsoft cloud service.
Microsoft will be paid $1.2 million a year to provide the cloud email service.
