A few days after Microsoft offered free Xboxes with student purchases of Windows 7 PCs, Xbox 360 users are experiencing updating errors.
Some Xbox 360 users have found a "disk unreadable" or "disk unsupported" error when promoted to updated the console. The only fix is to provide a new console.
Microsoft is offering affected customers a one-year subscription to Xbox Live, in addition to the console.
The new update is intended to allow for an extra GB of game disc storage, but it also improves the console's ability to alert for pirated disks. This alert will prevent the game from playing non-retail games in the future, a plus for Microsoft and video game retailers.
The issue of update failures is a sensitive subject to the gaming community and companies these days. Sony experienced a similar problem that led to bad PR when the PlayStation Network was put offline on April 19 due to a compromise in the storing of personal information. It was not restored until May 14, and users were required to update their firmware and passwords.
