MediaMall Technologies has released PlayLater, a DVR for online video and another step in the Seattle company's bid to help customers cut their cable cords.
PlayLater lets users record Internet videos and watch them later, even offline. The service rounds out the profitable company's earlier service, PlayOn, which lets people watch TV shows and movies from Internet services such as Hulu or Netflix on their television sets, by streaming the content from their PCs to devices such as the Wii, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 game consoles.
Originally billed as a complement to traditional cable services, MediaMall discovered that many customers had replaced their cable or satellite service with PlayOn. The company is among a growing number of organizations bringing Internet video to television sets, highlighting an increasing threat to traditional television and cable services.
MediaMall offers a free 14-day trial of its products. PlayLater runs $4.99 per month or $49.99 per year, but customers can combine the two services for a $70 annual fee.
The company is headed by CEO Jeff Lawrence, the former director of broadband at GetConnected.
