Coinstar, citing rising costs of debit card fees, said it will raise the price of its Redbox DVD rentals by 20 cents to $1.20, effective next week.
The Bellevue company lowered its fourth-quarter earnings estimates to 57-67 cents per share, lower than analysts’ expectations of 78 cents per share.
Coinstar reported third-quarter earnings of $1.18 per share, higher than analysts’ expectations of 88 cents per share as the company cashes in on customers abandoning rival Netflix, which raised its prices dramatically earlier this year, according to Bloomberg.
Earlier this year, Coinstar began renting video games at its Redbox kiosks.
Netflix’s big problems with keeping subscribers and staying out of the red come at an opportune time for Amazon, which has its own ambitious plans for its Amazon Prime video subscription service.
