Google appears to be joining tech rival Microsoft in ramping up an initiative to help returning war veterans.
In the same day that President Obama announced plans to bring home U.S. troops from Iraq by the end of the year, Google registered a half dozen domain names related to related to “Google for Veterans.” Including googleforveterans.com, googleveterans.com, and googleforvets.com, according to Fusible, which closely watches new domain name registrations.
Microsoft already has a major initiative for military veterans.
In August, Microsoft announced it was expanding the Redmond software giant’s Elevate America Veterans initiative by partnering with the U.S. Department of Labor to distribute 10,000 technology training and certification packages to veterans.
Microsoft said it was backing a jobs for American vets effort with $2 million in cash and up to $6 million in software and training to help U.S. military veterans get IT training.
Obama has challenged companies to hire 100,000 military vets or their spouses.
