Apple’s new iPhone 4S isn’t a dramatic departure from the existing iPhone 4, but there are some new and exciting features under the new phone’s hood.
The Wall Street Journal’s Walter Mossberg took a new iPhone 4S for a test drive and was impressed by the phone’s Siri voice recognition system, the new camera on the iPhone 4S, and faster download speeds.
Apple unveiled the new iPhone Oct. 4. Apple said Monday that it sold a record 1 million iPhone 4S’s in a single day, easily passing the previous record of 600,000 iPhone 4’s that was the company’s previous pre-order record.
Apple apparently exhausted its initial supplies of the new iPhone, extending waits for pre-order delivery to 1-2 weeks. They were available for delivery by Oct. 14, when they arrive in stores, when pre-orders began.
The iPhone is a competitor to Redmond-based Microsoft’s Windows Phone, which currently holds 5 percent of the smartphone operating system market vs. Google’s Android at 43 percent, Apple’s iOS at 27 percent and Research in Motion Ltd.’s Blackberry phone at 19 percent, according to August 2011 data from comScore.
