Mobile apps startup CrowdCompass has raised $1.3 million in a venture capital round, including investors from Seattle’s Alliance of Angels.
The Portland-based company bases four of its 23 employees at its Kirkland, Wash., office. CrowdCompass expects to hire more workers in the Seattle area as it continues to grow.
The privately held company, which makes mobile applications for conferences and events, said the round of funding led by the Oregon Angel Fund will be used to boost marketing and finish developing its next-generation event technology.
There also was a smaller investment from individuals associated with the Alliance of Angels.
The first customer for CrowdCompass was BanquetEvent.com (The Northwest Event Show). CrowdCompass also has created an app for the Northwest Credit Union Association, formerly Washington Credit Union Association.
At the Zino Society’s July Zino Entertainment Investment Forum, CrowdCompass was named the best presenter.
The company said its software, which has been in production since last year, allows event organizers an easy and affordable means of distributing all of the information about their events into all major mobile devices.
CrowdCompass makes apps branded specifically for an event. Its customers so far have included the New York ComiCon and annual meetings of the American Society of Anesthesiologists and Lions Clubs International.
The company was founded in 2009 after Chief Technology Officer Dave Shanley attended the annual Bumbershoot music festival in Seattle and determined that the event’s printed guide would be more useful on a mobile device.
