Microsoft is adding QR codes and Near Field Communication (NFC) capabilities to its mobile barcoding service Microsoft Tag.
Microsoft hopes by adding features to its mobile barcoding service Tag it will eliminate customer confusion over different types of bar codes in the marketplace.
“To help simplify the growing fragmentation currently taking place in the barcode/reader market, today Microsoft Tag is providing support for the two commonly used 2D barcode formats (Tag and QR Codes) and for Near Field Communications (NFC) capabilities,” said Aaron Getz, Microsoft Tag general manager, said in a blog post. “With this extension, brands have the freedom to choose the format most appropriate for their campaigns and give consumers the ease of one reader to use.”
Microsoft rolled out its mobile barcoding service in May 2010. Microsoft Tag technology was made available free of charge, allowing marketers or small businesses to direct people in the physical world to more information. The City of Amsterdam, for example, used the technology on landmarks and monuments so visitors can learn more information.
The technology allows mobile phone users to obtain more information by snapping a photo of the code.
