Microsoft has received a patent for technology that lets a game player record TV shows, videos or music while playing the game on the console.

The technology could be a sign that Microsoft wants to turn Xbox into a digital video recorder, according to TeamXbox.

The recently issued patent is for a game-playing console with a built-in digital video recorder, according to Bloomberg Businessweek.

Microsoft first applied for the patent in 2007, and it is not clear how the software giant might apply the technology.

Microsoft has been integrating new technology into its entertainment platform to beef up the Xbox 360 and improve entertainment search through Xbox Live.

Microsoft recently updated its Xbox game console to allow people to use spoken commands to surf for TV and movie content, marking the further evolution of Microsoft’s voice and motion technology.

Microsoft also rolled out a number of apps that will allow Xbox Live users to take advantage of Kinect to find content from more than 40 Xbox Live content partners. The move signals Microsoft’s big bet that – despite the popularity of watching content on small, on-the-go devices like smartphones and tablets – families still want to gather around a big-screen TV and watch programming at home.
