Apple Inc. is testing a smaller, 8-inch iPad tablet screen that could better compete with smaller and cheaper offerings from rivals including Amazon.com Inc.'s Kindle Fire.
Rumors of a smaller iPad have been reported for months, but The Wall Street Journal now has details based on interviews with unnamed sources working for Apple's suppliers. Among other things, the report said Apple is working with screen makers including Taiwan-based AU Optronics Co. and LG Display Co. of South Korea to supply test panels for a screen with a resolution similar to that of the iPad 2.
Apple is working with its Asian suppliers to test the new screen, which would be about 2 inches smaller than the existing iPad screen. Seattle-based Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) introduced its $199 Kindle Fire, which costs less than half of the $499 iPad, last September and began selling it in November. At the time, TechFlash reported, analysts questioned whether the Fire could be a "game-changer" in the market for iPads.
