Just two months after T-Mobile USA was wanting to sell itself to AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T), the Bellevue-based wireless provider is asking federal regulators to deny Verizon Wireless' proposed $3.9 billion purchase of airwave rights that are held by cable companies.
The T-Mobile/AT&T deal fell apart in December after federal regulators at the Federal Communications Commission and Justice Department opposed the deal on antitrust grounds.
The Wall Street Journal reported that T-Mobile said in a filing with the FCC that Verizon's deal would permit the nation's biggest wireless provider "to accumulate even more spectrum on top of an already dominant position, while checkmating crucial avenues for growth of its smaller competitors."
T-Mobile is a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom AG of Germany, while Verizon Wireless is a joint venture of Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE: VZ) and the British company Vodafone PLC.
